About the Boston School Tradition

Many of America’s most celebrated impressionist artists of the 19th Century enjoyed a rich tradition of painting, which continues today, known as The Boston School.

At the root of the Boston School is a devotion to tradition and craftsmanship. The early artists include Edmund Tarbell, Frank Benson, William M. Paxton, R. H .Ives Gammell and other masters. These painters returned to America embracing the teachings from the masters at the Academie Julien in Europe, and passed this legacy on to their students. They were trained to see and capture subtleties in color and form as well as nuances of light and shadow and apply these truths to the canvas. Thus, at the turn of the century the Boston Museum School represented one of the country’s greatest collections of artistic talent.

Inspired by Claude Monet, the Boston School artists painted their landscapes en plein air. This revolutionary idea has been applied since the 1850’s by artists who paint scenes outdoors directly from nature. This approach accounts for the truth to nature reflected on their canvases. These methods handed down by Paxton to Gammell and then from Gammell to his students Robert D. Hunter, Paul Ingbretson, Thomas Dunlay, and Gary Hoffman are still practiced today by the next generation of artists: Amy Chuckrow, Ann McGhee, Meg Mercier, Thomas Tietjen, and others.

Jensen Fine Arts is proud to represent an artistic heritage that dates back to the 18th century painter Jacques Louis David, and is ever present in the painters of today who continue to strive for truth and poetry in their paintings.
